So I made another outting to the Capilano river in North Vancouver. I awoke at the wee hour of 3:30am and arrived at the river just before 5am. Unfortunately a group of 3 other guys had already set up shop on the exact spot I was hoping to fish. My previous outting I had no luck further up on that run as the salmon were spooked by the time they make it to my presentation (baited hook). Finally when the group took a break to gut and clean their catch ( 2 coho each) I was able to make a cast and drift far down the run past them. BANG, salmon hits my bait...this is definately a bigger fish and was giving me some fight. The average size of coho running right now are 1-3 pounds and will increase in size as the summer progresses. This fish was probably 5-6 pounds and was very feisty...I have her at my feet and as I'm kneeling down to grab her she jumps and breaks my line...FUCK. I was so angry and choked I lost my fish...so chrome and fresh from the ocean. My adrenaline was pumping, yes it's very exciting to hook a fish like that, I knew my I lost the fish. The line had snapped above my leader line and that told me exactly why I lost her. I'd been getting snagged up on the rocks alot all morning and yanking my line free, this causes abrassion on your line...it's always a good idea to check your line from time to time for wear. Unfortunately I had not checked my line and obviously it was weakened and therefore snapped on me :(
I was choked so I told myself I was going to stay until I caught something. About an hour later I get another hit, less fight and I knew it was the typical sized salmon for this time of year. I was able to reel him in and dispose of him humanely...with my lead clobbering stick. He may be small but capilano jack coho are some of the best eating salmon around...Jacks mean they are fish that have returned a year early to spawn before they have fully grown
